11. Service Fee
•  We do charge a service fee for credit card transactions. A service fee is charged when paying with a credit card is a charge imposed by a merchant to cover the costs associated with processing the credit card transaction. This fee is distinct from other potential charges, such as an annual fee from the credit card issuer or interest paid by the consumer.
•  Merchants may pass on the costs of accepting credit card payments to the customer in the form of a surcharge or a convenience fee. These fees exist because businesses incur a cost for every credit card transaction they process.

Why merchants charge service fees
•  The primary reason merchants pass along service fees is to recover their credit card processing costs, which are a significant business expense. A single transaction fee is often a blend of three separate fees charged by different financial entities:
Interchange fees: Paid to the customer’s credit card-issuing bank to cover the risk of approving a sale, fraud, and handling costs. This is typically the largest component of processing fees.
Assessment fees: Paid to the credit card networks, like Visa and Mastercard, for operating their payment systems.
Payment processor fees: Paid to the company that provides the software or hardware to facilitate the transaction.

Types of Service fees
Surcharge: A surcharge is an extra fee added specifically for the use of a credit card.
Application: Applied to credit card transactions only.
Calculation: Typically a percentage of the transaction amount, capped by card network rules (e.g., up to 3.5% for Visa) and specific state laws.
Disclosure: Must be clearly posted and appear on the receipt as a separate line item.
Legality: Not legal in all U.S. states. Rules differ by state and can change.

Convenience fee: A convenience fee is a charge for the convenience of using a non-standard payment channel, such as paying a bill online or over the phone.
Application: Generally used for transactions where another payment method, like cash or check, is standard practice.
Calculation: Must be a fixed or flat fee, not a percentage of the total transaction.
Disclosure: Must be disclosed upfront and transparently.
Conditions: Can only be charged if the customer has an alternative, standard payment method available to them that does not incur the fee.
Legality: Permissible in all 50 U.S. states.

How merchants manage fees
Merchants have several options for how to manage credit card processing fees:
Absorb the cost: Some merchants include processing fees in their pricing, absorbing the cost as a regular business expense.
Pass on the cost: By implementing a surcharge or convenience fee, a business can pass the processing fees directly to the customer.
Offer a cash discount: Instead of adding a fee for credit cards, some businesses offer a discount to customers who pay with cash. This can encourage the use of lower-cost payment methods.
